Finding the Right Anxiety Therapist in Plano, TX

Finding the right anxiety therapist in Plano, Texas can be tough. There’s a lot to love about life here! Plano, along with Frisco, Allen, and McKinney, boasts great schools and a strong economy. There are tons of great options for shopping, dining, and entertainment. But despite the positives, as North Texas continues to expand, so does the need for mental health services. This is particularly true for those struggling with anxiety.

Finding the right anxiety therapist in Plano, TX is important!

Anxiety is the most commonly diagnosed mental health problem, and it’s on the rise, according to research. There are many explanations: Stressful jobs and the elusive work/life balance. Increased social isolation. Uncertainty related to economic stress, political divisions, and climate change.  It’s a lot to deal with.

You might think this is just how it’s supposed to be. You might feel like it’s a badge of honor to feel this stressed out all the time. You might even believe that you should be able to handle this better. But the simple truth is: you feel overwhelmed, and this negatively affects all areas of your life. It’s NOT a sign of weakness. There IS a way out.

Many great resources exist today to help you learn about anxiety and how to improve it, including my blogs. But so often I hear from clients, “I know what I need to do, I’m just not doing it!” If you're open to it, a therapist might be able to help you break through this. You just might need a little guidance from an experienced anxiety specialist.

As a therapist in Plano with over 25 years of experience helping people tackle anxiety and other issues, I share below my tips for choosing a great anxiety therapist in Plano, Texas, that's the best fit for YOU.

Check them out online. Look over their website to get a sense of their personality. Make sure they can explain what evidence-based methods they use to treat anxiety. Make sure they talk about anxiety treatment on their website or social media. Read reviews to see what others say about their work. Reviews from colleagues are valuable, as well! (*However, remember that certain types of therapists - social workers like myself, and psychologists- cannot directly ask clients for reviews, as this violates client confidentiality and could create undue influence on clients. Doing so violates our professional code of ethics and privacy laws.)

Schedule a consultation call. Since the most important predictor of success in therapy is your relationship with the therapist, make sure you talk to them before scheduling a session. You get a sense of their communication style and approach. Find out about their education, experience, and how they treat anxiety in therapy sessions. In my next blog post I discuss what to ask in this consultation so that you can feel more confident.

Trust your gut—at least a little! If you don’t feel comfortable after your first meeting with a therapist, it’s okay to keep looking. This is the most important advice I can give! Liking your therapist, even just a little, really matters. It will help when you need to face the hard stuff in therapy. (Anxiety can make it tough to feel at ease right away, but do your best to find someone you feel okay with.)

Consider your budget. Before you work with someone, ask about their fees and make sure they fit with your financial plan. If you need to use your insurance for financial reasons, be upfront about it when finding therapists. Communicate about this before you even schedule a phone consultation. It will save you a lot of time and headaches! Using insurance benefits for therapy is often less expensive than paying out-of-pocket (private pay). However, private pay therapy may deliver higher quality care. You’ll have more freedom to choose a therapist who fits your specific needs, rather than be limited to those in your network. Private pay therapists usually choose to have fewer clients, allowing them more time to spend on your care, and collaborating with your other medical providers. They sometimes have more experience, as well.

What truly matters, though, is the therapist's skill and your connection with them. This holds true whether you use insurance or pay out of pocket.

Finding the right therapist may take time, but it’s worth the effort to find someone who truly understands your needs and helps you feel supported.
